Message from James Spann

Yo moms and dads with kids at home (that would normally be at school)... I will be doing an online, live weather program Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. CT. it is fun, interactive, and best for kids grades 1-5, but older kids (and adults) should enjoy it as well. Learn more about the science of meteorology, how we forecast weather, severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and snow storms. You will learn and have a few laughs, and we all could use that now.

So, get it on your calendar... this Thursday at 10a CT. It will be streamed live here on this Facebook page. Be sure it is the James Spann page with the blue check (Verified)

Band students....

Band Parents and Students,

Due to the fact that on Friday afternoon when we left school, we did not realize we would not be going back to school for three weeks, and therefore many students did not take their instruments home, THE BAND ROOM WILL BE OPEN THIS AFTERNOON, MARCH 15, BETWEEN 3PM-5PM AND TOMORROW AFTERNOON, MARCH 16, BETWEEN 4PM-6PM for students/parents to come by and pick up their instruments.  Students/parents will need to enter the band room through the courtyard door.  The PRIMARY reason we want students to take their instruments home is to clean them.  Mr. Posey will be sending out information on how to do this via email within the next couple of days.  The SECONDARY reason is so that students can practice on their own.  While we will not be assigning pass-off assignments during this time, we will post material on SmartMusic for the students to be working on while they are at home.  Thanks so much!

Schools closed March 16 through April 6

Update: ALL SCHOOLS CLOSED MONDAY MARCH 16 until APRIL 6.

Dear HCS Families,

Given cases of Coronavirus in Alabama, Gov.  Kay Ivey announced K-12 public schools will close effective end of the academic day, Wednesday, March 18.  The call to delay closing until Wednesday was likely made to ensure parents can secure child care.  Many parents do not need this extra time, and many of you are concerned about returning to school this upcoming week.

While school will be open Monday-WednesdayMarch 16-18, any student absences will be excused.  This allows you to make the best decision for your child without the penalty of an attendance issue.  Faculty and staff will be present at their campuses Monday-Wednesday to support the education of your children if you choose to attend.

Thank you for your patience through this ever-changing and difficult time.  Best to you and your family.

Dr. Kathy Murphy
Superintendent

6th grade Field Trip

6th Grade Field Trip

Good evening! We wanted to give you the details of an exciting field trip coming up for the entire 6th grade!

When: April 2nd

Where: Birmingham Children’s Theater
2130 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd N
  Birmingham, AL 35203

Cost: $14.00 per student via MySchoolFees. Payment due by 3/16

Why: This 9 weeks in Language Arts, we have been reading The Wednesday Wars, a novel about a middle school boy being forced, unfairly in his opinion, to read Shakespeare. As we read the novel, we are also reading some of the Shakespeare plays along with our character. This has led us into a discussion about plays and dramas and how they compare to the novels we often read. So, to experience this first hand, our students will get to go to the Children’s Theater to see a play, The Sword in the Stone, and will then get to have a small group intensive with the actors and producers about all things Shakespeare. They will learn how we interpret classical Shakespeare into modern themes today.

What you need to know:
  • We will be boarding the bus at 8:45 AM so it is imperative that your child be at school on time that day.
  • We will eat a sack lunch and EVERYTHING will need to be thrown away before boarding the bus to head back to the school. This includes water bottles. Pack the lunch in a brown bag, a large ziplock, or some other disposable bag. There will be no microwave or refrigerator available, but we will transport the lunches in ice chests in order to keep them as cool as possible on the bus until lunch time.
  • At this time, we only need a couple of chaperones per team, and this will be on a first come, first serve basis. Please email a team teacher if you would like to chaperone and we will let you know when the list is full. If you aren’t on the chaperone list, but still want to come with your child on the field trip, you may purchase your own ticket for the 10:00 AM show for $10 through the theater, and you may drive to the theater and meet us there. We will let you sit by them in the theater, but they must ride the bus with us.
  • All children must ride the bus to the theater and back to the school. If you want to check your child out early, you may do so in the front office after we have arrived back at Bumpus. We should be back around 2:30.
  • There is no permission slip because you signed permission for all field trips during registration. If for some reason you do not want your child to accompany the field trip, please notify the team teachers.
